Week 2 Wednesday Froglets and Thursday Tadpoles Native Plants

This week we went looking for native and invasive species. We found Himalayan blackberry right off the bat as well as salal and Oregon grape. Later we found bracken fern, sword fern and the ever prolific English Ivy! A great mix of native and invasive species.

Many logs were overturned with the tadpoles and we even found a centipede protecting her eggs!

Wednesday froglets covered so much ground we didn't get a single crisp photo all morning. So much time spent exploring!

Week 2 Tuesday Froglets Native Plants

Today we explored boundaries and talked more about being respectful and safe.

We played at the beaver fort by sliding rock.

And while we were there noticed the many cawing crows. What on earth could they be doing??

So we snuck up the slope to investigate. Lo and behold!! An owl!! We think it was a great horned owl as it did not have the markings of the barred owl. It was sitting on a branch ignoring the crows cawing and diveing.
What an exciting day!!

Thursday Tadpoles week 1 Squirrels

Tadpoles are usually the quietest group and we were able to hear a chattering squirrel. No sightings though.

Note: this is not a squirrel.

I think we must have hiked for days!

Before we finally stopped for some soup. Forest made of course.

We ended up at sliding rock,

Where we found a huge fort!

Maybe we will see squirrels next week.

Wednesday Froglets week 1 Squirrels

At the tree with a face we found someone had added teeth!

We explored holes and evidence of squirrel middens (areas where they eat) with our flashlights.

After snack froggys wanted to pose for a photo with a tadpole.

We were so loud and had so much fun there wasn't a squirrel around for miles!

See you next week!

Spring Tuesday Froglets week 1 Squirrels

Right out of the gate we found decomposing logs, spider eggs, centipedes, and plenty of holes to check using our new flashlights.

We found a squirrel midden near the kitchen. That is a spot on the ground where squirrels have sat above and thrown down unwanted parts of cones they were eating. Later we took a break on the train log.

Good friends taking a hug break!

Last we visited sliding rock and the fort there. A bunch of beavers moved in to the fort. They had stylish hats and flashlights. :)

See you next week!
