Miss and Lichen Thursday Tadpoles

Even though Freddy Fungus and Alice Algae'smarriage was sometimes "on the rocks" they lichen each other forever. 

Lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus that provides the shape of the shelter and an algae that provides the food. Separate you have an algae and a fungus but together you get lichen!

Ok thank you for putting up with my love of puns.

Alice Algae was a splendid cook. Alice Algae always had more than enough to eat but never really could build a house. 

The day Fred Fungus and Alice Algae met was pure magic. Fred had never had some much food to eat. Alice had never been so well protected in such a snug house.

Mosses and Lichens!

This week we are pleased to bring you a story. It's a tale of mystery and intrigue. It is a tale of food, love, and the quest for a home. 

Fred the Fungus was a skilled builder. Fred the Fungus could build a house out of anything! 

But Fred the Fungus had a terrible weakness. Fred the Fungus could not make food!

Owls Thursday Tadpoles

The Tadpoles really got in to the spirit of the owl. They swooped all over the trail catching their meals of mice, squirrels, snakes, and frogs. The game went on all morning and I have the feeling a few may have had great naps after. We also observed an owl box today! 

Owls Wednesday Froglets

Today we searched for signs of owls, observed an owl box, and worked diligently on the tiger trap. 

Owl week! Tuesday Froglets

While we did not see an owl today, we were able to observe an owl box, examine a tiny hemlock sapling, and work on the tiger trap. No tigers yet. 

Week 5 Ducks!

This week we explored Shoreview Park and found Hidden Lake. It was a great week for Mallard ducks and their ducklings!! Tuesday and Wednesday we counted ten ducklings but Thursday we counted seventeen!
